Altmärker
(Bush) A rare European bean with an enigmatic history. Altmärker beans have light green pods and lovely seeds that are slightly elongated and coloured half wine red and half white. The name Altmark translates to ‘old march’. In medieval Europe a ‘march’ referred to a border or neutral zone under a common control. Perhaps this refers to the divide between the red and white on the seed coat? More likely, Altmärker is suspected to hail from either the Polish village Stary Targ (referred to as ‘Altmark’ in German), or the Altmark region in Germany that ranges across the northern third of Saxony-Anhalt. As Altmark was at one time part of the territory of the March of Brandenburg, this region has alternately been referred to as “The Cradle of Prussia”. 1
