Delicata

(C. pepo) Introduced in 1894 by the New York based Peter Henderson Company. It is nicknamed ‘sweet potato squash’ due to its sweet creamy/buttery flavour. It stores approx. 3 month at the most. It goes by many names, including Bohemian squash, sweet potato squash, and peanut squash. During the Great Depression (1929–1939) Delicata fell out of favour for its lack of robustness (low yields, susceptible to disease, and short shelf life). It has since received in popularity with home gardeners. In the 20th century it has regained its status as a favoured cultivar following the marketing of a disease-resistant variety.
