Gottscheeer Strankalan

(Pole)
[German] “[…] Eine Familiensorte aus dem südslowenischen Gottschee, nach dem 2. Weltkrieg in Kärnten weiter erhalten.” (Sortenwerkstatt, 2024)
[English] “[…] A family variety from the southern Slovenian Gottschee, preserved in Carinthia after the Second World War.” (Sortenwerkstatt, 2024)
Gottscheeer Strankalan was cultivated by the German speaking community in the Gottschee region of Carniola, Habsburg Empire. The historic region of Gottschee in present day is part of Slovenia.
“A Slowenien but german speaking (gotschee) woman that had to come “home” to Hitler’s German country during WW2 took beans with her and reproduced them for centuries in her New home Klagenfurt. I know siblings of her.” (Sortenwerkstatt, 2025)
“[…] it came originally from south slowenia, the region Gottschee. There were german speaking people there before the world war 2. And Hitler wanted to get rid of the slovenian speaking people in south Austria and so he changed families. The german speaking slovenian people moved to carinthia and the slowenian speaking Austrian moved to Auschwitz… however, this slovenian family moved to Klagenfurt and took some of their bean varieties with them and maintained it until 2010 more or less. Then I got some seed because I know them.” (Sortenwerkstatt, via HHS, 2025)
Received from Katherina Soos, whom describes this variety as a great two-use variety.
