Grand-maman Dinel

(Grandma Dinel)
(Pole) A heritage variety of French Canadian history, directly preserved by the Jardins de l’écoumène in Quebec. This variety originates with Mrs. Maximilienne Corbeil Dinel at her home in the Outaouais region of Western Quebec. 1, 2 This variety has yellow pods that are good for use as a meaty snap bean when young. According to the Jardins de l’écoumène,
[English] “In 1907, Maximilienne Corbeil Dinel received as a wedding gift a bag of beans that she called « ses rameuses ». She immediately adopted them and was still growing them at the age of 94. It was her granddaughter Judith David who contacted the Jardins de l’écoumène in 2008 with the hope of entrusting us with her grandmother’s precious seeds so that they would not be forgotten! With the help of the Potagers d’antan team, research was undertaken to identify this bean, or at least find its origins, but has still not yielded conclusive results. [French] C’est pourquoi il porte celui de Grand-maman Dinel en l’honneur de celle qui les a préservés pendant toutes ces années !” (Jardins de l’écoumène, 2024 3)
