Green Hubbard

(C. maxima) The original hubbard cultivar, dating to 1798. Its origins extend to either South America or the West Indies, and was later brought to New England. In the 1830s it was grown in Marblehead, Massachusetts. The Hubbard is named for Mrs. Elizabeth (“Marm”) Hubbard, the neighbour of Marblehead seedsman James J. H. Gregory. Elizabeth was his original source of the Hubbard squash. She gave Gregory seeds saying, “it was the best squash she had ever tasted in her life.”. In 1840 James J. H. Gregory introduced Hubbard squash through his seed business, the Gregory Seed Business. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
