Heiligenburger Russe
(Pole) For use as a dry and snap bean. A beautiful heirloom of Russian origins dating back to at least 1945. Heiligenburger Russe (‘Heiligenburger Russian’) was brought to Germany after World War II (1939-1945) by a returning prisoner of war (POW) in Russia. According to Genbänkle, the POW who actively preserved this variety worked as a forester for the Prince of Fürstenberg. In his retirement age, he later lived in Heiligenberg (‘Holy Mountain’ or ‘Mountain of Saints’), Germany. After his passing, his wife passed on these seeds in 2012 for further preservation, a year prior to her own death. 1
Heiligenburger Russe pods are crescent shaped (typical of kipfler and anellino type beans) with purple streaks.
