Mandan Banquet

(C. maxima) Mandan Banquet (Will’s Banquet) squash was developed by Oscar H. Will and his sons, of North Dakota. ¹

At 26 (1881), Oscar H. Will purchased Fuller’s Greenhouse, which he later renamed Oscar H. Will & Company. He worked with the nearby native tribes to develop new varieties of corn and later carried out experiments with beans and squash. Oscar H. Will is most noted for making commercially available the Great Northern Bean (original seed given to Will in 1886 by the Hidatsa man, Son of a Star). ¹

The Mandan Banquet variety was originally derived from the cross between the Buttercup and Gilmore Squash (a cross of Winnebago and Arikara Squash, commercially available in 1926). The resulting Mandan Banquet Squash boasts the cupped bottom of the Buttercup, and is orange in colour. It is an early winter squash with firm flesh, suited for pot roast. ¹
