Origin
The Koanga Institute in New Zealand shares that Selugia, according to their original source,
“Another special New Zealand heritage bean that has come in to us from many places around Northland, but first from Willow of Tapuaetahi Beach in Kerikeri. Willow said it had originally come in with an Italian family in the north after the war. It is a speciality drying bean.”. 1
It is additionally,
“[…] believed to have arrived in New Zealand with a returning serviceman after the war.” (Seeds of Diversity, ON CL T)
It is uncertain, however the name ‘selugia’, may be derived from ‘saluggia’ or ‘salugia’ (Piedmontese). Saluggia is a comune in the municipality of Vercelli in the Piedmont region of Italy. This area, in particular, is known for its production of beans.
