Sultan’s Golden Crescent

(Pole) Introduced to the Seed Savers Exchange (SSE) in 1981 as ‘Sultan’s Golden Moon’ by OR SI M. This variety bears curved yellow pods. The small oval seeds are burgundy with cream speckles and splotches.
Sultan’s Golden Crescent has a “sister” variety, Sultan’s Green Crescent, which has green pods and white seeds.

History
Sultan’s Golden Crescent is an old heirloom (BC KO T1) of unknown origin and history. It is thought to be an American variety, likely due to its emergence and popularity from the US based SSE. 2
According to the SSE database, past listings have referred to the ‘Sultan’s Golden Crescent’ and ‘Sultan’s Golden Moon’ varieties as being from “Turkey’s Ottoman Empire”.
According to the SSE seed catalogue of 2009, this variety is,
“Rarely offered and almost extinct. SSE is pleased to reintroduce this variety. Very distinct curly yellow snap bean, stringless, prolific and very good taste.” 3
The SSE additionally shared that,
“‘Sultan’s Golden Crescent’ bean is in the Seed Savers Collection and is considered an Exchange heirloom since it’s been offered on the Exchange for more than 20 years. “Originally was named ‘Sultan’s Golden Moon” by Exchange lister OR SI M who introduced it to the Exchange in 1981.” (2025)
